Acquire basic psychological theories and research methods to study scientific approaches to the human mind from different research fields such as foundational psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, and clinical psychology. Select courses based on your interests and inclinations from a wide range of subjects, letting you either develop expertise in specific fields as you engage in specialized research on humans and society through experiments and practical training or study broadly across the different fields of psychology.
When studying psychology, having an interest in the human mind and human behaviors is vital, as is a focus on scientific and objective approaches and thinking analytically and logically. This field studies research methods and findings that view the psychology of the individual based on relationships with others and society. It scientifically explores how we influence each other and how we behave within organizations and groups.
Developmental psychology is a field that studies the growth process of mind and body throughout a person's lifetime (from conception to death).
It illuminates the patterns of developmental changes that occur with the passage of time and explores the factors that cause these changes.
This is a field where all kinds of data are collected through experiments to infer the invisible workings of the mind. It examines physiological and cognitive functions related to mental activity by setting specific conditions and comparing data behavior under multiple conditions.
There is a close relationship between sleep and mental stability or cognitive performance, including academic ability, and the magnitude of its impact has made this a field of particularly high focus within psychology.
In addition to the curriculum of the Liberal Arts Psychology Course, students will master the knowledge and advanced skills to conduct psychological research and experiments required by psychology professions. Students start with the fundamentals of psychology, then complete specialized subjects to expand into practical learning. The fields of (1) Cognitive Psychology, (2) Social Psychology, (3) Developmental Psychology, and (4) Physiological Psychology have been established according to the selection (direction) of specialized courses.
The department has various psychological equipment and laboratories as well as a sandplay therapy room and other facilities needed in the practical study of clinical psychology. All students have access to SPSS, advanced statistical analysis software used in professional psychological research, and can read online articles not only in the fields of psychology and behavioral sciences, but in physiology, neuroscience, and medicine.
Compared to other universities, we have more required courses to help students master knowledge and skills in psychology. Though it is not easy, this curriculum is designed to meet the expectations of those wishing to study psychology in earnest as well as to broaden interest and deepen learning in this field.
The faculty in this department have truly diverse areas of expertise, including not only the basic areas of psychology such as experimental, social, and developmental psychology, but applied fields such as clinical and educational psychology, and further into peripheral fields of psychology. An indicator of whether you have acquired a basic understanding of psychology is the ability to pass the Psychology Examination (hosted by the Japanese Union of Psychological Associations). For students researching sleep, the department recommends obtaining qualifications to become a Sleep Improvement Instructor who gives advice on the proper environment and habits for sleep.
