蕪村は日本と中国の古典文学を幅広く読みました。いくつかの本からは深い影響を受け、俳諧において本歌取りもし、目立たせず巧妙に生かしてもいます。また、画業にも影響が現れ、テーマに生かしたり、賛に好みの漢詩を引用することもあります。同時代の文学作品も、その交友関係を中心に読み、作品とのつながりが指摘されているものもあります。以下では、それらの主なものを集め、石華舎蔵の書籍については画像も示しました。
Buson has read a wide range of Japanese and Chinese classical literature. Certain kinds of books have specially influenced him. Buson has used particular texts and words from these books for his haiku poems, sometimes apparently and also skillfully indirectly. These influences have appeared in his painting as well, in the themes of pictures and short texts, especially some Chinese poems, as quoted and written on the pictures.
